INSPIRATION: THE BALENCIAGA EFFECT

The biggest trends we had seen from Paris to NY's last catwalks were subjugated by elegance and sophistication. It's the kind of look inspired by Alfred Hitchcock divas like Kim Novak or Grace Kelly, more than a half century ago. Back then, the designers who epitomized French couture were Dior, Balmain and Givenchy. However, the man considered to be the master in this domain was Cristobal Balenciaga.

As maiores tendências que foram vistas nos últimos desfiles de Paris a Nova Iorque foram subjugadas aos signos da elegância e sofisticação. É o tipo de visual inspirado nas divas hitchcockianas como Kim Novak e Grace Kelly, mais de meio século atrás. Na época os designers de moda que marcaram a alta costura francesa foram Dior, Balmain e Givenchy. Contudo, o homem considerado o mestre nesse dominio foi Cristobal Balenciaga.

Though originally inspired by the Spanish Renaissance, Balenciaga is most renowned for his stark simplicity and streamlined silhouettes that contrasted with Dior's opulent New Look collection. He loved the fluid lines created by jerseys draped over the body, and often played with waistlines in order to create special effects. An architect of fashion, he favored structured geometric shapes - along the lines of his signature spherical balloon jacket with a funnel collar, a cocoon coat that almost engulfed the wearer, as well as the sack dress and the chemise.


Inspirado pela renascença, Balenciaga é sobretudo conhecido pela sua rigida simplicidade e silhuetas aerodinâmicas em absoluto contraste com a opulência do New Look de Dior. Balenciaga adorava as linhas fluídas criadas pelos jerseys plissados a acompanharem a delinearem as formas do corpo feminino, e frequentemente jogando com as linhas de cintura de forma a criar efeitos especiais. Um arquitecto da moda que favorecia as formas geometricas e estruturadas, onde se contam os casacos com efeitos esféricos tipo balão e gola em funil, o casaco cocoon que quase submergia o corpo, assim como o vestido e a camisa saco.

"Balenciaga not only created a style, but a technique as well. He was the architect of haute couture," says the Hubert de Givenchy about him. The Spanish-born designer had an astute sense of balance and form, and an obsession for perfection with a great attention to detail: collars falling back from the shoulders, giving their wearers a swan-like neck, three-quarter length sleeves that allowed them to flaunt their jewelry. Everything he designed influenced fashion designers all over the world and current fashion continues to pay him a deserved tribute.

Tudo o que ele criou influência até hoje designers em todo o mundo e a moda actual continua  a prestar-lhe a devida homenagem.
