"The Giacometti Variations" is an original installation by American artist John Baldessari specially designed for the Prada Foundation in Milan. The Californian artist was inspired by the imagination of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti and created nine of huge figures of 15 feet tall ,which were clothed and outfitted with garments and objects designed by Baldessari himself, thus forming a hypothetical, though immobile, fashion show.
"Variações sobre Giacometti" é uma original instalação do artista americano john Baldessari especialmente concebida para a Fundação Prada, em Milão. O artista californiano inspirou-se no imaginário do escultor suisso Alberto Giacometti e criou o esguias figuras femininas de 4,5 m de altura, vestidas com roupas e objectos criados pelo próprio Baldessari, formando um hipotético, mas, imóvel, desfile de moda.
The exhibition captures an idea of integration and dialogue between art and fashion, where the osmosis between model and sculpted figure becomes a declaration of mutual attraction and communication.
A instalação capta a ideia de diálogo intrinseco entre a arte e a moda, onde a osmose entre a modelo e a figura esculpida torna-se uma declaração de mútua atracção e comunicação.
In this project, John Baldessari revisits some images that arise from the closer relationship between the film and fashion. The figures made of resin and steel, sprayed with bronze, were inspired by characters and settings as diverse as Degas ballerina "La petite danseuse of fourteen years", Marilyn Monroe and Hollywood glamour of the 50's, the nineteenth century’s crinoline of "Gone with the Wind" or the trench coat of Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca”.
Neste projecto, John Baldessari revisita algumas imagens que nasceram da relação intíma entre o cinema e a moda. As figuras feitas de resina e ferro, pulverizadas com bronze, foram inspiradas pelos caracteres e sets tão diversos como a bailarina de Degas " A pequena dançarina de 14 anos", Marylin Monroe e o glamour dos anos 50 em Hollywood, a crinolina do sec. XIX do "E Tudo o Vento Levou" ou a gabardina de Humphrey Bogart em Casablanca.
Born in National City, California in 1931, John Baldessari is one of the most influential artists of his generation. Known above all for his conceptual works, centered around processes of choice and selection, he uses techniques ranging from photography to words to texts, whose rules he subverts and exposes, interrogating the spectator in a sort of ironic game of deconstruction.

Conhecido pelo seu trabalho conceptual, centrado em volta do processo de escolha e selecção, ele usa tecnicas que vão desde a fotografia ás palavras e textos, cujas regras ele subverte e expõe, interrogando o espectador numa espécie de jogo de ironia e desconstrução.
