TELMA RUSSO - THE FASHION MANIAC PHOTOGRAPHER



I first met Telma Russo at Modalisboa, some editions ago, and quickly she became one of my favourite young photographers;

I felt in love mainly with her backstage work. I was very impressed because Telma could pick up the vibes of an entire collection only with one backstage photo. She knows exactly what is important in the middle of the mess, she can lead her photographic eye to the most interesting details, in order to shoot the moment which will reveal the motto of a collection before the runway took place. This prove her great sensibility for fashion and to read what the fashion designer wanted to say with his work. So, it isn't only the technical capabilities that makes a great photo, Telma Russo teaches us that in addition to a technically perfect photograph, there is a special photographic eye, a own way to see and to plan what we see in advance that makes a great photo. I loved to talk with Telma and her work because it is always great to talk with a person about her passion, isn't it?     

Encontrei a Telma Russo pela primeira vez numa das edições passadas da Modalisboa e rapidamente se tornou uma das minhas jovens fotógrafas favoritas; Apaixonei-me, sobretudo, pelo seu trabalho de backstage. O que mais me impressionou foi a capacidade da Telma descrever uma colecção inteira, algumas vezes, só com uma fotografia de bastidores. Ela sabe distinguir o verdadeiramente importante no meiod a confusão e consegue como ninguém dirigir o seu olhar fotográfico para os detalhes mais interessantes com o objectivo de captar o tema da colecção, ainda antes de ela ser mostrada na passerelle. Isto prova a enorme sensibilidade de Telma para a moda, assim como para interpretar o que o criador quis dizer com o seu trabalho. O que Telma nos ensina é que por detrás de uma grande fotografia não estão só as capacidades tecnicas perfeitas, mas, um olho fotográfico especial, uma maneira própria de ver e de planear com antecedência o que se quer ver, em resumo muito trabalho, por um lado, e um talento raro por outro. Adorei falar com a Telma sobre o seu trabalho porque é sempre inspirador falar com alguém sobre a sua paixão, não é?   



Qual é a sua formação enquanto fotógrafa?
What's your background as a photographer?


Assim que terminei a escola fui em busca de estágio, bater de porta em porta entregar currículos, arranjar contactos pela internet falar com profissionais do meio, etc... Pouco tempo depois arranjei estágio, como assistente do Fotografo Mário Príncipe, e após este comecei a “colaborar/assistir” outros Fotógrafos, como Sérgio Santos, João Carlos, João Bacelar, Luis Eça, João Portugal. Para mim resultou e ainda resulta, como um dos melhores métodos de aprendizagem. Estar lá, ajudar a criar, e ver para aprender. A certa altura comecei a criar portfolio, a requisitar manequins e a fazer testes fotográficos. E mais tarde comecei a ser chamada para fazer editoriais em algumas revistas primeiro as online e depois as impressas.

Once I finished school I went in search of internships, going door to door handing my curriculum, getting contacts through the Internet to talk to professionals inside, etc ... Shortly after, I got an internship, as assistant to photographer Mário Principe, and after this I began to "collaborate / assist" other photographers, as Sergio Santos, Joao Carlos, João Bacelar, Luis Eça, João Portugal. For me worked with great photographers is one of the best methods of learning, being there, helping to create, to learn and see. At one point I started to create a portfolio, ordering models and making photographic tests. And later I began to be called to do a few editorials first in the online magazines, and then the print ones.

Porquê a moda como o seu grande tema inspirador?

Why did you choose fashion as your great theme?

Escolho Moda porque é algo, que me fascina desde pequena. Creio que é algo comum com a maior parte das mulheres, e o fascínio pelas coisas belas, neste caso roupas acessórios etc., desde as texturas dos tecidos, os conjuntos, padrões, roupa, a criação de novas tendências a beleza criada através de um conjunto ou padrão ao assentar no corpo...Foi isso que me levou a tirar primeiramente, o curso de Stylist , na escola de Moda ”Magestil”onde tive um primeiro contacto com a fotografia. Mas foi só 2 anos mais tarde, quando decidi levar a paixão pela fotografia mais a serio, ao tirar o curso de Fotografia.na “ Etic”que soube de imediato qual o caminho. Depois fui fazer uma especialização em Fotografia de Moda na St.Clairs Martins ( London Schcool of Art ).


I chose fashion because is something that has fascinated me since childhood. I think that is common with most women, the fascination for beautiful things in this case clothing accessories etc, from the textures of fabrics, prints, patterns, looks, creating new trends and, mainly creating beauty by a look , prints based only in the body ... that's what led me first to take Styling at the Magestil Fashion School, where I had a first contact with photography. But it was only two years later when I decided to take my passion for photography more seriously, and I took Photography at ETIC, and then I knew immediately which would be my way. Then I went to a specialization in Fashion Photography in St. Clairs Martins (London School of Art).

Como é trabalhar na Modalisboa?
How was working at Modalisboa?



Trabalhar na ModaLisboa é sempre bom! Todo aquele ambiente de correria e expectativa de que corra bem, todo o trabalho que ali é apresentado, feito em conjunto por uma grande equipa de profissionais, desde o fotógrafo aos cabeleireiros e os estilistas/criadores. É sempre muito estimulante e motivante poder retratar todo um lado “escondido” aos olhos do público.

Working in ModaLisboa is always great! All those vibes and expectation to everything goes well, all the work that is presented there, working together with a large team of professionals from photographers to hair stylists, makeup artists, fashion designers... It is always very uplifting and motivating being able to shoot the "hidden" side which is far away from the regular public eye.

O que é que gostaste mais nesta edição Modalisboa/Transfusion?
What did you love the most in this edition Modalisboa/ Transfusion?



O que mais gostei.....Gostei da exposição do Valentim Quaresma, da sua Nova Colecção, e da colecções apresentadas por Luis Buchinho, Ana Salazar, Dino Alves. No geral estavam todas lindas, sendo muito difícil escolher só uma...mas estas foram aquelas que eu facilmente usaria. Gostei imenso também do facto de nesta edição os espaços estarem mais amplos a nível de backstage.

What did I like the most....? I enjoyed a lot the Valentim Quaresma’s exhibition of his new collection, and the collections of Luis Buchinho, Ana Salazar and Dino Alves. In general, they were all beautiful and very difficult to pick just one ... but these were ones I would wear easily. I really enjoyed also the fact that in this edition of Modalisboa the spaces were wider at the backstage.

O teu trabalho tem muito de fotos de bastidores e o que eu mais admiro é o facto de conseguires às vezes com uma só foto ( ou muito poucas) captares a #Big Picture de uma colecção. Como é que consegues isso?

Your work is based in backstage and I love your photos because when we saw them we can get the big picture about a certain collection only by a single (or few) photos shoot by you. How can you do that?

Sinceramente, para dizer a verdade não sei, LoOl :) Mas ainda bem que consigo transmitir essa mensagem, fico muito contente, pois quando olho para os manequins na linha de espera, à entrada da passerelle, é mesmo isso que tento retratar, conseguir captar todo o conceito de uma colecção, através de pequenos detalhes obtidos em poucas imagens, nem sempre explícitas.

FH: É por isso que eu adoro a fotografia de moda e, sobretudo, as fotos de backstage porque na passerelle tudo acontece demasiado rápido – e mesmo da fila da frente – há muitos pormenores que nos escapam e que são importantes para definir uma colecção. Uma boa foto faz-nos descobrir uma e outra vez uma colecção inteira (palavras minhas).

Honestly, to tell the truth, I do not know, Lool:) But thank goodness I can get that message, I am very happy because when I look at the models in the waiting line at their entrance to the runway, that's just what I try to portray, fully capture the whole concept of a collection, obtained through small details in a few pictures, not always explicit.


FH: it’s why I love fashion photography mainly backstage photos because in the runway everything happen too quickly and in the most of the time – even from the front row – there are many details that we couldn’t look and they are very important to define the collection. A great image makes us to find really the vibes of an entire collection (my words).

Tens algum(s) projecto(s) a correr neste momento? 
Do you have any current projects? If so, what are they about?



Neste momento encontro-me a fazer catálogos de moda, e testes para algumas agências. Tenho um novo projecto em mão, que ainda se encontra no segredo dos Deuses, mas estará pronto muito em breve. (hi hi hi). Mas o projecto que ando a apostar de momento é a escolha, de uma boa equipa de profissionais “residentes” (Make up, cabeleireiro etc...) para realizar trabalhos, com quem quer projectar a troca de ideias.


Right now I’m doing fashion catalogs, and making tests for some agencies. I have a new project in hand, which is still under wraps, but it will be ready very soon (hi hi hi). But the project I've been to bet at the moment goes through the choice of a good team of professionals "residents" (Makeup artists, hair stylists etc ...) to perform works, who want to exchange ideas and projects.

O que é que procuras transmitir com o teu trabalho?
What do you try to achieve with your photos?


Principalmente captar a atenção das pessoas, ou do olhar mais desatento, para a magia que ali paira no ar. Captar no meio de um turbilhão de gente, tudo a correr de um lado para o outro, um ar mais nervoso e isolado, de um manequim no meio de tudo, por exemplo. Linhas que as mesmas possam formar com o corpo, em poses, pequenos momentos de concentração ou descontracção...

Mainly, my goals are to capture people's attention, and giving a more attentive look to the magic that is in the air. Capturing from inside the whirlwind of people, all running from one place to another, shooting a more nervous and isolated look lost among the crowd, a model in the middle of everything, for example. Lines that models can make with their body, poses, little breaks or concentrated moments...

As tuas fotos são bastante emotivas; Sentes que há alguma linha de ligação entre elas? 
Your photos often tend to be quite emotive; do you feel there is anything that links them all together?


Sim, até porque tento sempre, seguir uma linha estética, ou ate mesmo contar uma história a nível visual. Gosto que o trabalho final seja o mais fiel a realidade, e o mais emotivo e forte possível.

Yes, because I always try to follow an aesthetic line, or even tell a story at a visual level. I like that the final artwork will be as faithful as possible to reality, and more emotional and strong as possible.

Como é que escolhes os sitios para fotografar?
How do you choose your locations?

Normalmente tenho tendência, para certos ângulos, onde posso criar linhas ou pontos de fuga e ter uma perspectiva diferente. Escolho os locais antes do desfile começar, ando as voltas a olhar para tudo quanto é cantinho que me possa posicionar, e a testar luzes ou algum sitio que possa usufruir para tal efeito… Assim desta forma quando o “espectáculo” começa já tenho o espaço minimamente “estudado”.

Normally I tend to certain angles, which can create lines or vanishing points and having a different perspective. I choose the best places before the show started, I usually go around to look the right corner where I can take the best position, and test lights or some place I would like for that purpose ... So, when the "show" begins I already have catch the place minimally "studied".

És inspirada por algo em particular? Filmes, arte, literatura, design?
Are you inspired by any particular films? Art? Literature? Designs?


Pode se dizer que sim, de certa forma, aqueles cujo trabalho admiramos de alguma forma influenciam o nosso “olho fotográfico” e a nossa maneira de fazer uma imagem. Por exemplo na pintura tenho vários favoritos que me influenciam, mas, indirectamente..... ou de alguma forma neste tipo de registo (Backstage_ ModaLisboaTransfusions) creio que foi a obra de Egon Schiele e a de Paolo Uccello. O primeiro pela forma crua e pura da representação do um retrato, e o segundo pela cores berrantes e fortes que este usava.

You can say that, somehow, those whose work I admire in some way influenced my "photographic eye" and my way of making an image. For example in the painting I have several favorites that indirectly influenced me.... or otherwise in such registration (Backstage_ ModaLisboaTransfusions) I think it was the work of Egon Schiele and Paolo Uccello. The first one by the rawness and pureness of the portrait’s representation, and the second by the bright and strong colors and strong that he used to.

What about other photographers?


Fotógrafos.Pesquiso muitos trabalhos, de excelentes fotógrafos, mas mais concretamente de poucos, neste caso( Backstage_ModaLX) arrisco me a dizer que a base da inspiração foi uma mistura de Ralph Gibson com Annie Leibovitz. Ele pelas formas que via e capturava, ela a luz e a cor. Ou pelo menos gosto de pensar assim. ( HE HE HE HE HE)


Photographers. I researched many works of great photographers, but a few more specifically, in this case (Backstage_ModaLX) I venture to say that the sources of inspiration were a mixture of Ralph Gibson with Annie Leibovitz. Gibson by the forms that he saw and captured; Leibovitz by the light and color. Or at least I like to think so. (HE HE HE HE HE)

Próximo passo, para já a curto/médio prazo é a realização de trabalhos, a construção de um site oficial, a idealização e construção de um local, “estúdio de fotografias”.
