INSPIRATION: COCO CHANEL - THE FANCY REBELLION

In the late 1920s, Coco Chanel designed what became a revolutionary collection of dresses. Unfussy and entirely black, they became ubiquitous in popular culture, spawned the term ‘little black dress’ and prompted Vogue to describe the chic creations as a “…uniform for all women of taste.”

No final da década de 20 do século passado, o trabalho de Coco Chanel tornou-se numa revolucionária colecção de vestidos. Sem adornos espalhafatosos, em negro total, e um pouco ambiguos na cultura popular, os vestidos de Chanel ficaram conhecidos no mundo da moda pelos LBD (little black dress) e foram descritos pela Vogue da época como o uniforme chic de todas as mulheres de bom gosto. Começava aqui a universalização da moda que antes estava reservada às classes sociais mais ricas.

Chanel attributed much of the success of her dresses to the women who wore them. “Look for the woman in the dress” the French designer once instructed. “If there is no woman, there is no dress.”

Chanel atribuiu a maior parte do sucesso dos seus vestidos à mulher que os usava. "Olhem para a mulher no vestido", ensinava a designer francesa, se não virem a mulher, não há vestido.

The 1920s was the decade the world lost its innocence and became "modern", and Chanel's spirit sums up the essence of the 1920s: It was the only decade where rebellion was made with elegance. Chanel redesigned the young woman's role within society; She made the women free by the clothes they dressed, Chanel stripped fashion of excess material, frilly lace, and the constraints of the past.

Os anos 20 do século passado foi a década em que o mundo perdeu a sua inocência e se tornou "moderno". O espirito de Coco Chanel redesenhou o novo papel da mulher dentro da sociedade. Ela tornou a mulher livre através das roupas que vestia, e expulsou da moda todo o tecido em excesso, as rendas, artefactos, embelezamentos e demais constrangimentos do passado.

Chanel's "Garconne Look" was quickly adopted in Britain and the U.S. and has broadly been called the "flapper look" which was defined by it's "masculine" influence. Chanel used male motifs like sailors outfits and mechanic's dungarees as inspirations for her fashions.

O look Garçonne de Chanel foi rapidamente adoptado na Grã-Bretanha e nos Estados Unidos, e ficou conhecido nos países de lingua inglesa como o "Flapper look", definido pelas influencias do vestuário masculino. Chanel utilizou motivos masculinos como o vestuário dos marinheiros e dos mecânicos como inspirações para as suas criações.

Chanel played a huge role in designing the modern woman: Independent, fashionable, self-sustaining, sexy, intelligent, and unique.

Coco Chanel desempenhou um papel enorme na redefinição não só da moda feminina, mas, do próprio conceito de mulher moderna que se queria independente, elegante, auto-sustentada, sexy, inteligente e única. 

High fashion until the twenties had been for the richer women of society, but Chanel's designs changed it. The "Flapper look" (Garçonne style) were made for ordinary women that work and enjoy go to the jazz pub to dance.

A alta moda, antes dos anos 20, era reservada às mulheres ricas da sociedade, mas, as criações de Chanel mudaram irreversivelmente os conceitos e o "Flapepr Look" (Garçonne) teve nas mulheres comuns que trabalhavam e gostavam de se divertir, dançando nos clubes nocturnos de jazz, as suas principais clientes.

She worked in neutral tones of beige, sand, cream, navy and black in soft fluid jersey fabrics cut with simple shapes that did not require corsetry or waist definition.  They were clothes made for comfort and ease in wear making them revolutionary and quite modern. 

Chanel trabalhava sobretudo os tons neutros de beje, areia, creme, o azul navy e o preto em peças suaves em malha de jersey, com corte simples e fluidos que não necessitavam de corpetes e demais artefactos de sustentação que aprisionavam o corpo feminino e limitavam os movimentos. Eram roupas feitas para serem fáceis de usar e confortáveis, iniciando-se aqui a revolução dos conceitos modernos palicados à moda.

In that decade women gave up their constricting dressing styles thanks to Coco. In 1920 the Nineteenth Amendment gave most women the right to vote in the US, and the french designer gave to fashion the song of the feminism which remains until today. Coco Chanel was the example and became the symbol of the modern woman that she helped to create; She knew so well to read the changes of her time.  

Foi nesta década que a mulher se libertou definitivamente dos corpetes e dos vestidos mil folhas, graças a Gabrielle C que soube ler como ninguém as mudanças da sociedade do seu tempo e mesmo antecipa-las. Em 1920 foi aprovada nos EUA a 19ª emenda que deu à mulher o direito ao voto, mas, foi através do vestuário que Chanel trouxe a canção do feminismo para a Europa. Coco Chanel foi o exemplo e o simbolo vivo da mulher moderna que ela ajudou a definir através do que vestia.

Coco Chanel was the most influential figure in fashion embracing short hair,incorporating men's clothes in a female wardrobe and discarding the corset. Elsa Schiaparelli is one key Italian designer of this decade who was heavily influenced by the "beyond the real" art and incorporated it into her designs.

Coco Chanel foi uma das figuras mais influentes na história da moda, introduzindo nas mulheres fashionistas da classe média o cabelo curto, incorporando no vestuário feminino elementos até aí reservados ao vestuário masculino, e descartando as peças de tortura como o corpete. Elsa Schiaparelli, teve na moda italiana semelhante influência voltando a introduzir "por detrás do real" a arte nas suas criações.

Karl Lagerfeld incarnated perfectly the Coco's spirit and brought it to life in the recent years. He immortalized the Chanel's style giving it a contemporary edge, much to the taste of the younger generations. The "Logofield" had the taste and intelligence not to make a simple copy of the Chanel's most iconic pieces, but, making most wanted amazing upgrades, by the youngest celebrities of the entire world, and re-blogged and repetead by the fast fashion world.

Karl Lagerfeld incarnou na perfeição o espirito de Coco e, mais, tornou-o um statement nos últimos anos. Karl imortalizou o estilo de Madame Chanel, actualizando-o ao gosto das gerações mais novas. E isso foi um grande feito porque Lagerfeld não se limitou a copiar e a reproduzir as criações icónicas de Chanel, mas, sem lhe ferir a alma, o "Logofield" soube fazer upgrades fantásticos usados pelas jovens celebridades de todo o mundo e recopiado à exaustão na fast fashion.
