fashion heroines: TM COLLECTION BY TERESA MARTINS:FAR FROM MEN CLOSE TO GODS!

My favorite TV series in the late 70's was the american The Little House on the Prairie starring Michael Landon (For whom I'd a very serious childish crush) and Melissa Gilbert, about a family living on a farm in Walnut Grove, Minnesota in the 1870s and 1880s. My first thought when I saw the Teresa Martins' TM collection for next Fall was that American dramatic television program that got me in tears every Sunday afternoon I had 12.

A minha série de TV favorita em finais dos anos 70 foi a americana Uma Casa na Pradaria com Michael Landon (por quem tive uma séria paixoneta infantil) e Melissa Gilbert, sobre uma familia que vivia numa quinta em Walnut Grove, Minnesota entre 1870 e 1880. O meu primeiro pensamento quando vi a TM Collection de Teresa Martins para o próximo Outono/Inverno foi essa dramática série que me deixava em lágrimas todos os domingos à tarde tinha então cerca de 12 anos.

What I love in the Teresa Martins' work is the confluence of folk symbols, fantasy, social history and non-conformism values and concepts which gave to TM collections the kind of depth that it's not easy to find in Portuguese fashion and clearly makes her work far away from what other Portuguese designers are doing.

O que adoro no trabalho de Teresa Martins é essa confluência de simbolos populares, fantasia, história social, valores e conceitos inconformistas que dão às TM Collections o tipo de profundidade que não é fácil de encontrar na moda portuguesa e que claramente marca o seu trabalho de forma tão diferente do que por cá se está a fazer.

Teresa Martins has the merit to carry a different kind of energy to fashion and making her own strong fashion statement. Her colors, prints, acessories (look at the fur bags!) and jewelry (of course styling matters!) are so bold even subversive when minimalism and monochomatic are the big picture in Portuguese fashion (and not so).

Teresa Martins tem o mérito de transportar para a moda toda uma nova energia ao mesmo tempo que faz a sua própria afirmação de moda. As suas cores, acessórios (olhem para os sacos de pêlo!) e jóias (Claro que o styling interessa!) são marcas de um atrevimento impar, subversivo até quando o minimalismo e o monocromatico são a big picture da moda portuguesa ( e não só).

The collection was titled " Far From Men, close to Gods" and it gives voice to human values in a big picture of cultural diversity with an approach of the modern aesthetic of the XXI century. When in fashion was rolled the lux hippie glamour and the 70's vibes, TM Collection goes further and evokes the need to go near old values and a more natural and rustic way of life... perhaps near god(s) rather material values that men created to be unhappy forever since.

A colecção intitulada "Longe dos Homens, mais perto dos deuses" dá voz aos valores humanos e transporta-nos para um quadro de diversidade cultural mas com uma aproximação estética ao Sec. XXI. Enquanto na moda rola a cena do hippie-chic de luxo e vibrações vindas directamente dos anos 70, TM vai mais longe e evoca a necessidade de chegarmos mais perto de uma espiritualidade antiga e de formas de vida mais naturais e rústicas... talvez mais perto dos deuses e menos dos valores materiais que os homens criaram para serem infelizes desde então.
