WHO THE HELL IS (THE MAN BEHIND) THE LISBON TAILOR?
Portuguese people who are attentive about what is happening in the blogsphere, certainly, have heard about the street style blog ALFAITE LISBOETA/ THE LISBON TAILOR, because it is one of the most famous portuguese blogs which show us the personal style of dudes and chicks, mainly Portuguese from Lisbon or that passed by Lisbon. If the idea is not original, and The Sartorialist is the great reference in that theme, the LISBON TAILOR adds something new to what already exists: despite the photos are about stylish people who have a great personal style in somewhat different from the ordinary mortals, José Cabral has the great intuition and talent to catch the best ( or can I say the soul? The immaterial "thing" that goes behind the look!) ) of the people he shot. There's always a kind of lightness in his shoots that make the person he photographed more what he/she truly is. There's a honesty and singleness that I couldn't find in other blogs of the kind. But...
Who the hell is the man behind The Lisbon Tailor?
To answer that question and to kill my curiosity I adapted a Proust Questionaire and put it in a form of "nagging" questions to my favorite portuguese blogger.
Os portugueses mais atentos ao que se passa na blogsfera, certamente, já ouviram falar do blog the street style ALFAITE LISBOETA, mais que não seja porque é um dos mais famosos blogs portugueses que nos dá a ver o estilo único dos lisboetas (e não só), ou de quem passa pela capital. Se a ideia não é original, a grande referencia é, pois, The Sartorialist, o certo é que o Alfaite Lisboeta acrescenta algo de novo ao que já existe. Apesar de retratar gente estilosa que de alguma maneira consegue ser diferente da maioria dos mortais, as fotografias de José Cabral vão mais além... ele tem a grande intuição e o talento de captar o que de melhor (ou posso dizer a alma, esse "algo" imaterial que vai para além da aparência!) das pessoas que fotografa. Há uma leveza iluminada e genuina nos seus shootings que mostram a pessoa como ela é, com a honestidade e singeleza que não se encontram em outros trabalhos do género. Mas...

Now I am taking some days off in one of my favorite cities. Couldn’t be better than that!

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
O que é que vês como o mais profundo estado de miséria?
Before a question like this I could think in a thousand different images without any connection between them. But I think this “lowest depth of misery” is always connected, in an unavoidable way, to inhumanity. In some way linked to insolence and absolute lack of concern about the human condition.
Acho que perante uma pergunta dessas nos podem passar 1000 imagens diferentes e sem aparente ligação entre si. Em todo o caso acho que esse “mais profundo estado de miséria” estará sempre associado de uma forma incontornável de falta de humanidade. Alguma forma de desrespeito ou despreocupação absoluta pela condição humana.
What is it you most dislike nowadays?
O que é que mais detestas no mundo actual?
I haven’t a clue! I suppose there are many things that I dislike (less than things which I like, I hope!). But it occurs to me the cynicism. The world and society in general (not only the Western ones) moved more and more over transparent and genuine processes, but in general I think that cynicism is out there. The mental judgments that in our social life we make about others, the statements that we made about what someone is doing ... that's what we faced at the Media today.
Não faço ideia. Suponho que haja muitas coisas que me desagradam em particular (menos do que aquelas que me agradam espero). Mas ocorre-me o cinismo. O mundo e as sociedades em geral (não só as ocidentais) movem-se cada vez mais por processos mais transparentes e genuínos mas, de uma forma geral, acho que ainda existe muito cinismo. Os juízos que, na reprodução da nossa vida social, fazemos sobre terceiros, as considerações que tecemos sobre o que faz este ou aquele... A face da comunicação social é uma imagem disso mesmo.

I am not a myth and hero’s person, so I only can answer to that question based on children’s imaginary. I loved the Indiana Jones. Today I can recognized, among other things, the charm of being a character connected with academic life, but, simultaneously, with other face where adventure and bravery were always there in every moment.
Nunca fui muito de criar grandes heróis e mitos por isso acho que só consigo responder a essa pergunta com base em imaginários infantis. Adorava o Indiana Jones. Hoje consigo reconhecer-lhe, entre outras coisas, o charme de ser uma personagem ligada à vida académica mas, simultaneamente, com uma outra face onde a aventura e a valentia estão presentes a todo o momento.

There is an endless number of attributes which I would like to have in a higher dosage that I really have.

Heroine is a very strong term. I haven’t any in particular. If you had asked me that question in male terms my answer will be the same.
Heroína é um termo muito forte. Não tenho nenhuma em particular. Se me tivesses colocado a pergunta no masculino ter-te-ia dito a mesmíssima coisa.
Your favorite photographer?
E o teu fotógrafo favorito?
I don’t consider myself as a photographer, and I don’t realize myself with someone who knows a lot about photography, and because so I'm not a person who have this or that photographic references. I started shooting because I met a lot of bloggers that did the same things which I proposed to do about two years ago. Among all these blogs the one that captivated my attention was The Sartorialist. So my answer couldn’t be different than Scott Schuman.
Não só não me considero um fotógrafo como não me vejo sequer como alguém que entende a fotografia e, como tal, possui estas ou aquelas referências. Eu comecei a fotografar porque me foram apresentados um leque enorme de bloggers que fazem, genericamente falando, a mesma coisa que eu me propus a fazer há dois anos e meio. De todos esses blogues o que mais me cativou foi o The Sartorialist. Posto isto acho que não te poderia dar outra resposta que não o Scott Schuman.
The quality you most admire in a man?
Qual a qualidade que mais admiras num homem?
The rectitude.

The quality you most admire in a woman?
E numa mulher?
In the male example I can easily avoid an aesthetic vision about what is an idea of a man who I could admire the most. In what a woman is concern I can’t avoid my own conception of femininity. And for me femininity is a (perhaps chimerical) idea about a perfect dosage of some attributes that catch me: elegance, intelligence, gentleness, willpower, and wit, among others.
No exemplo masculino consigo, mais facilmente, evitar uma visão esteta sobre aquilo que é a minha concepção de um homem que eu admire. No que à mulher diz respeito acabo por não conseguir (a não ser que a muito custo e não me apetece e não creio que pretendas que o faça) fugir uma concepção muito particular sobre um atributo – a feminilidade. E a feminilidade para mim é uma dosagem perfeita (e, necessariamente quimérica) de meias dúzia de atributos que me cativam em particular: a elegância, e inteligência, a ternura, a força de vontade, a espirituosidade, entre outros.

I haven’t any. Maybe I should... half-dozen of them. I am so disorganized! In some way something (a motto, basic principles, commandments... whatever it was) that could help me to mark out my path, perhaps it could bring me good things.

I never did that exercise (somewhat over self, isn’t it?). A question we would like to answer is a question connected always with areas that we have more control and we know better. These themes which we can amaze and impress the audience. It’s for sure a problem that I can find in me: there isn’t any theme about what I could be proud to know a lot of it.
Nunca fiz esse exercício (um tanto ou quanto egótico não?). Uma pergunta à qual gostaríamos de responder é uma pergunta que nos remeterá sempre, necessariamente, para aquilo que mais e melhor dominamos. Define TM Collection by Teresa Martins.
In your SS2010 collection the motto was Africa with “Spirits Speak” and in the last collection Fall/Winter 2011 you named it “Far from men close to gods” and the East was the inspiration. Is the world your source of inspiration? Why?
One of my favorite fashion designers is Anna Sui mainly because the richness of her prints, her tribalism inspiration and bohemian vibes of her collections whose DNA is recognizable even to those who do not know much about fashion. I found in TM collection also a very marked genetic code. Do you agree? What are your international influences, your reference designers?

Na colecção anterior Primavera/Verão 2010 a temática foi Africa com “Spirits Speak” e nesta última colecção Outono/Inverno 2011 com o sugestivo nome “Close to Gods” foi o Oriente a fonte de inspiração… O mundo é a sua fonte de Inspiração? Porquê o mundo?
The world is my source of inspiration. Everything already exists you only could represent and associate things in a different way. First you must learn how to look for then you learn how to re-create.
O Mundo é a minha fonte de inspiração. Tudo existe, apenas, se poderá representar e
associar de uma forma diferente. Aprender a olhar para aprender a recriar.

What I like more in TM Collections is a certain regard about inner spirituality as the references to Nature in the prints and rich fabrics used as silks, cottons and linen. What are your concerns and what is the message through your work?
O que mais aprecio nas criações da TM Collection é uma certa espiritualidade intrínseca assim como referencias à Natureza sempre presentes quer nos padrões/pinturas quer nos materiais nobres utilizados como os linhos, sedas, algodões… Quais são as suas preocupações e que mensagem quer deixar passar com o seu trabalho?
A creative work expressed itself the soul of the artist who made it. My concern is all about how that message passed on, is the true of it. In the specific case of the TM Collection the whole that results from the association of matter, color and patterns should reflect the symbiosis between aesthetics and the passion underlying the creative process.
Um trabalho criativo expressa sempre a Alma de quem o cria. A minha preocupação prende-se com a veracidade com que essa mensagem é transmitida. No caso específico da TM Collection o todo que resulta da associação da matéria, da cor e dos padrões deverá reflectir a simbiose entre a estética e a paixão subjacentes ao processo criativo.

One of my favorite fashion designers is Anna Sui mainly because the richness of her prints, her tribalism inspiration and bohemian vibes of her collections whose DNA is recognizable even to those who do not know much about fashion. I found in TM collection also a very marked genetic code. Do you agree? What are your international influences, your reference designers?
Um dos designers de moda que mais aprecio é Anna Sui quer pela riqueza dos seus padrões quer pela tendência tribalista e boho das suas colecções cujo ADN é reconhecível mesmo para quem não entende muito de moda. Encontro também na TM Collection um código genético muito marcado. Concorda? Quais são as suas influências internacionais, os seus designers de referência?
One of my great concerns that I had always present in this project was making a brand’s identity. If there is identity, there is personality and ability to evolve which are the main elements to the survival of the species. My international references are Dries Van Noten, Kenzo, Antonio Marras, Marni, Etro, Chloé, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake and many others.
Uma das preocupações que sempre tive presente neste projecto foi criar uma identidade de marca. Ao existir identidade, existe individualidade e capacidade de evolução elementos fundamentais para a “sobrevivência da espécie”! Designers/ marcas cujo trabalho respeito e tomo com referência são, Dries Van Noten, Kenzo, Antonio Marras, Marni, Etro, Chloé, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, e tantos outros…
Fashion maybe a perfect stage to convey an important message beyond making beautiful and quality clothes, although fashion is often related with something very superficial and volatile which changes every six months. Do you agree?
Concorda que a moda pode ser um palco perfeito para transmitir algo mais do que roupa bonita e bem executada? A moda é frequentemente conotada com superficialidade e algo muito volátil e transitório que muda de seis em seis meses. Ainda assim é possível fazer passar uma mensagem mais profunda e duradoira?
Clothes are pretty like a second skin, so they must reflect our mood and our feel and energy. As almost everything in life, at least there is energy and vibration, so it’s utmost importance what binds us closely would be in harmony with the beat of the being.
A roupa é uma segunda pele… deverá reflectir o nosso carácter, o nosso “sentir”, a nossa energia…
Como tudo na Vida é em última instância energia e vibração, é da máxima importância que o que se liga intimamente a Nós, esteja em harmonia com a Energia / Vibração do Ser.
Once I wrote about TM collection that the label is a mix of traditions, fantasy and social history with a cosmopolitan accent and non-conformist glamour. And for me this mix of references made the TM’s creations unique and radically different from what is doing in Portuguese fashion. Do you agree with that?
Uma vez escrevi sobre a TM collection que as suas criações resultam num misto de tradições da cultura popular, fantasia, história social e um glamour não-conformista e cosmopolita. E para mim é essa mistura de referências que tornam as suas criações únicas e muito diferentes do que cá se faz. Concorda?
Undoubtedly. I think this is a very realistic definition of the mix which are under to all TM’s creations: Nature+men+history+innovation+aesthetics+excellence+boldness+passion+timeless
Sem dúvida! Acho que se trata de uma definição bastante realista e verdadeira do Mix subjacente às criações TM : Natureza+ Homem+ História+ inovação+ Estética+ Excelência+ Ousadia+ Paixão + Intemporalidade

In my opinion the Portuguese fashion is all about monochromatic pallets (black, white, red) and a “new” classic mood but the designers don’t bet much in breaking the classics and let the mind free in order an unlimited creativity. That state of free minds we can find in the upcoming designers and then they lost this ability to innovate, and it seems to me that the most recognized designers are afraid of. What do you think about the repeating of the same formulas collection after collection?
Na minha opinião a moda portuguesa vive muito de paletas monocromáticas (preto, cinza, branco, vermelho) e de um certo classicismo renovado onde se investe pouco em romper com a tradição clássica e deixar o espírito correr livremente conduzido pela criatividade infinita. Isso começa por acontecer um pouco com os novos e novíssimos criadores que saem das escolas de moda e depois vai-se perdendo esse free spirit que acaba por ser bastante condicionado nas colecções dos consagrados. Concorda com esta apreciação? Ao que se deve essa repetição das mesmas fórmulas de colecção para colecção?
There are so many factors not only aesthetics but commercial ones. In some way the designer could be more focused in a monochromatic pallet. The nudes are so much less “striking” and they are timeless and consensual in a competition than the same piece in vibrant colors which is more appealing but dated. Design pieces have a medium/ high price that reinforces the decision about neutral colors.
Aqui entram factores, não apenas de ordem estética como também de ordem comercial. Poderá ser que em determinada colecção o sentido estético do criador esteja mais focalizado numa paleta monocromática….As cores neutras sendo menos “marcantes” são mais intemporais e arrancam nota máxima quando em competição, com o mesmo artigo , em cores vibrantes, mais apelativo mas com data limite bem definida…Artigos de design têm em geral um pricing médio /alto o que reforça a irredutibilidade da decisão sobre as cores neutras!...

A TM Collection trás assim uma energia de renovação e criatividade ilimitada à moda portuguesa. Sente que há público para aceitar essa ruptura com aquilo que identifica a moda que se faz em Portugal?
Yes, I think so because you must “defragment” people’s mind and help them to have a new mental judgment about themselves.
Sim. É preciso “desfragmentar” um pouco a mente das pessoas e ajudá-las a ter uma nova consciência de si próprias.
Once someone said that TM Collection is fashion for decided women… can you comment?
Um dia alguém disse que a TM Collection é uma moda para mulheres resolvidas…
We should wear what give us joy and what identifies us. To have “integrity” in that process it’s important an inner knowledge and a self-consciousness, otherwise people get dressed concerning the established standards of fashion trends and in that way they lose their identity before the “tribe” they belong.
Há que vestir o que nos dá prazer e se identifica connosco.
Para haver “honestidade” neste processo, é importante um conhecimento interior e uma consciência de si. Caso contrário as pessoas vestem-se por identificação com padrões estabelecidos de tendências de moda diluindo-se no grupo e perdendo a identidade…
In Portugal it seems that “fashion is in fashion” with the explosion of workshops and graduations related with the subject. The number of young people whose dream is to be a fashion designer or a stylist are growing so quickly that I’m afraid there is no place in the sun for everyone. What do you think about?
Com a proliferação de cursos de moda, workshops, licenciaturas… no país parece que em Portugal a moda está na moda. Vejo com alguma apreensão esta explosão de interesse dos jovens portugueses pela moda e que partilham o mesmo sonho de virem a ser designers e estilistas. Tendo em conta que Portugal é um mercado tão pequeno haverá lugar para todos?
I think it’s not a private issue of Portugal. People realized that they must take a rule in the world because they really belong here. On the other hand if they have the talent, if they have the ability to identify it and follow their dreams with honesty and passion I believe that they will find their place in the sun. It’s more a personal issue than a national issue.
Penso não se tratar de uma questão de Portugal. As pessoas têm que se posicionar no Mundo porque na realidade é a ele que pertencem. Por outro lado se tiverem talento, se o identificarem e se o seguirem com honestidade e paixão acredito que irão encontrar esse “lugar ao Sol”. È muito mais uma questão de postura individual do que de País.
How do you think the brand’s internationalization? What are your projects to disclose TM Collection in new markets?
Como é que vê a internacionalização da TM Collection? Projectos para divulgar a marca?
Related with my previous answer, I’m standing in the world not only in Portugal. I work for the “Tribe” that can read and feel TM Collection. We have a special product to a tribe all over the world. TM Collection was born with the globalization which is for us a vital issue. Along this year we will go to international fairs in Holland, England, Germany and France. We are studying the USA’s market and we hope to open outlets in India and Berlin.
Na sequência da minha resposta anterior, eu posiciono-me muito mais no Mundo do que em Portugal. Trabalho para a “tribo” de pessoas que sabem ler e sentir a TMcollection. Temos um produto de nicho e uma “tribo” espalhada pelo Mundo. A TM nasceu com a internacionalização a qual, é para nós uma questão vital. No decorrer deste ano vamos participar em várias feiras internacionais na Holanda, Inglaterra, Alemanha e França. Estamos a estudar a comercialização do produto TM nos EU. Esperamos abrir dois pontos de venda na Índia e outro em Berlim.
