ON FRIDAY'S CHRONICS - THE FASHION LITTLE GIRL

The girl should have no more than 10 and what caught Gervasio’s attention was her walk, the balance and lightness of it. Despite she had a worn-out pair of white tennis, the girl walked in a way that Gervasio had only seen on fashionable ladies in high heels in whom, for balance reasons, the body parts that touches the ground slightly, are the toes pressed inside pointed shoes. Gervasio was sure that in these ladies the heels never touched the ground, and if they did so it should be a certain kind of sacrilege that somehow disfigure the perfect feminine elegance.
Gervasio was sitting in a cafe in front of Mr. Nazaré’s newsstand, and that girl appeared in his vision’s field  like a pretty dancer who refused to defile their ballet flats on the dirty pavement of the sidewalk. She really didn’t fly or jump what is so current in children of that age, but she was touching the ground so lightly, not supported by high heels, but rather by the worn rubber soles of the espadrilles. Because of that the girl seemed to him something surreal. Gervasio followed her walk with the eyes glued on the feet of a ballet dancer until she went into the newsstand. The girl’s pleated skirt turned in a peculiar movement as she went to the store that reminded to  Gervasio  a TV program what was a fashion show where  the models had that same grace while they were  moving their bodies with an amazing lightness and the clothes got the same billow. But the girl, far away from haute couture dresses, wore only a simple skirt of a modest fabric that had seen better days and an old wool handmade sweater. But she was so graceful and proud in her modesty that it was enough to intrigue Gervasio, and he decided to wait forward the girl returned to the street.
After a few moments the girl came out reading a fashion magazine which was not consistent with the girl’s age. As Gervasio could see it was a very expensive foreign fashion magazine with glossy and gorgeous pages and an attractive model well dressed and perfectly coiffed. Gervasio knew that those magazines are not even sold in Portugal; It was the early 70s, far from the first editions’ appearance of the Vogue in Portuguese language, and far away from the Portuguese fashion publications in the 90’s. But this story was set 20 years before ...
The girl was walking along the sidewalk, literally, with his head stuck in the magazine, sometimes crashing with others passersby, but she completely ignored them. The girl was totally absorbed by the magazine’s perfect world where people, children, animals, houses, plants ... everything that existed was worked up to full beauty. The child dreamed... now she was part of the pictures reproduced in bright colors on the magazine’s pages, and everyone knows that when a child dreams, the whole world was suspended to make way for the child’s unstoppable imagination which have no limits that not includes adult deceptions.

Gervasio went into the Mr. Nazare’s establishment who was alone trying to sort the daily newspapers, and Gervasio questioned him about the girl.
- Ah! Paula? It's really a very curious girl! - Mr. Nazare said
- Do you know her? Gervasio asked again.
- Yes, and I know her grandmother too who works around at the Magalhães’ family. She was the cook there.
- Ah! I get it, that imported magazine carried by the girl is for Mr. Magalhães’ wife, isn’t it? I was curious how the girl was reading the magazine... completely absorbed by it.
- In fact, Paula does not read the magazine - Mr. Nazare said - she lives within these magazines. A very curious case indeed! Paula can’t read French yet. But every month, without fail, the girl comes to me with a small coins’ bag, and buy me this magazine, the Vogue Paris itself; Then the girl always ordered the same magazine for the next month since 2 years from now.
- And how old is this girl? Gervasio asked with a growing curiosity.
- She finished now the primary school, I think she was nine.
Gervasio was few minutes in silence.
- And by any chance do you know where she got the money? I don’t think that she comes from a wealthy family and the imported magazine should be very expensive, shouldn’t it?
- A little fortune! An hundred crowns! Look, what I know is the girl joins coins here and there, and she told me once, in secret, that in the months she cannot get little jobs to do, she joined the coins that her grandmother gave her to lunch in the school canteen.
- Ok, so the girl starves to buy a fashion magazine in a language she cannot even read?
- Yes. She used to smell the magazines and I think she ate them too. - Mr. Nazare said laughing – Did you see how she walks, Mr. Gervasio? That girl seems one of those models we saw in the TV fashion shows who floated instead walk like the other human beings do. Poor grandmother, look at the good lady’s fortune: to raise a whimsical dreamer!
- Don’t say that, Mr. Nazare, don’t... Maybe the girl will become a great fashion photographer, an amazing seamstress instead, or one of those ladies who design models and sell them by a fortune.
- Or in a simple way to say it: The girl is crazy! But I like such girl with her funny walk and her old clothes that she wear like she was a princess. And according to her grandmother she is a good student. Just crazy with these magazines. Hopefully, I hope that she won't be lost, such as these muggings we can see out there.
- Well, Mr. Nazare, I'll leave you this money to pay for the girl's next month magazine. It is my contribution to the dreams of this marvel child. And if she ever ask who paid for the magazine, tell her that it was Mr. Back, and this subject is tidy. At least the girl will have her lunch.

Gervasio went away from the newsstand making happy faces, he will be a kind of guardian angel of that girl's dreams for a while. The alleged Mr Back laughed to himself when he reminded this episode; Don't people usually say that angels have no back?

Since that day I never knew who Mr. Back was, who paid me the magazine without interruption for more than 12 years. And me... well I'm just followed my dreams and fight that fashion happened right in my way, never in my back!

A Gervásio a miúda parecia-lhe algo surreal.

- Ah! A Paula? É realmente uma menina bastante curiosa! -Respondeu o Sr. Nazaré.
- Conhece-a? Voltou a perguntar Gervásio.
- Acabou agora a primária, julgo eu.
E segundo a avó é boa aluna.

NADA.
